If anyone wants to send books to Iraq
directly, I have some addresses. (In some cases I have e-mail addresses
also, so that you can verify ahead of shipment that they are wanted.
Situations can change rapidly, both because of rotation of personnel and
because of stocks.) I need to check to be sure that they are current,
but in at least three cases, I am quite certain that they are.
I have been sending only paperbacks, as the postage goes
further, of course. A box of about sixty books can be sent for about
$11.50 or so. I get used book boxes from the Barnes & Noble dumpster;
they can of course be gotten elsewhere also. It is probably just about
as cheap for you to send the books directly as via me, and I would
appreciate that in any case, as I do have a lot to ship. Sent about
900-1000 last month; postage bill ran about $250.00, not bad for the
quantity.
I send books MEDIA rate. That does not take much longer than
PRIORITY, and costs about 1/2 to 1/3rd. You will need a customs form,
which can be secured from the post office. Magazines, if sent, cannot be
sent MEDIA rate, but can go PARCEL POST, which isn't too bad. Magazines
are of a heavier-weight paper, and for other reasons also I haven't sent
many. The only exceptions are about 100 pounds of comic books, and
another 100 pounds or so of National Geographics.
If you have a Half-Price Books store near you, I have found them
awfully good in donating books. Because books are used, they cannot
send them back to a publisher/distributor, and do not need to trash them
either (i.e.,tear the cover off and dispose of).
